6. SAS celebrates 70th

On November 15, 2024, SAS celebrated the 70th anniversary of becoming the world’s first airline to operate a commercial flight over the North Pole, a historic milestone achieved on November 15, 1954. This groundbreaking flight from Copenhagen to Los Angeles revolutionized global travel, reducing flight times and fuel consumption while establishing Copenhagen as a critical hub connecting Europe and North America.

This achievement symbolized Scandinavian innovation and set the stage for sustainable aviation practices, which SAS continues to champion today. Marking the anniversary, SAS honored its pioneering legacy with a commemorative flight on the same route, reflecting on the transformative impact of the Polar Route on economic ties, tourism, and cultural exchange worldwide.
