Historical Updates Archive
Here you can find a log of significant updates from previous months.
July 2025
July 2025
Key updates in July included: SAS announces a majority stake from Air France-KLM, a record aircraft order, changes to cancellation policies, and new promotions. Here are the details:
1. Air France-KLM Acquires Majority Stake of SAS
In a transformative move, Air France–KLM has announced plans to increase its ownership stake in SAS from 19.9% to 60.5%, pending regulatory approval. This deal deepens SAS’s integration into the SkyTeam alliance and will most likely align the EuroBonus program more closely with Flying Blue, reshaping connectivity and award opportunities for members.

2. SAS Places Record Order for 55 Embraer E195-E2 Jets
Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) has signed its largest direct aircraft order since 1996: 45 Embraer E195-E2 jets, plus purchase rights for an additional 10 aircraft. Valued at roughly US $4 billion (excluding options), this deal underpins SAS’s long-term strategy to modernize its regional fleet, cut emissions, and open new growth corridors from Copenhagen and across Scandinavia.

3. SAS Announces Return to India with New Mumbai Route 🇮🇳
SAS is returning to India after a 17-year absence! The airline will launch a new year-round service between Copenhagen (CPH) and Mumbai (BOM) starting June 2, 2026. The route will operate five times weekly with an Airbus A330, offering a fantastic new long-haul option for earning and redeeming EuroBonus points.
Tickets are not yet on sale, and award seats have not been released. For those interested, we recommend setting up an alert on AwardFares to be notified as soon as cash and award tickets become available.
4. SAS to Remove 24-Hour Free Cancellation Policy
SAS is making a significant change to its booking policy. Effective August 27, 2025, the 24-hour free cancellation rule will be removed for cash tickets purchased on or after this date.
- Exception: The rule will still apply to tickets to or from the United States when booked at least 7 days before departure, in line with legal requirements.
- Award Tickets: This change does not affect award tickets. They continue to follow the standard EuroBonus award cancellation policy, which allows for cancellations for a fee up to 24 hours before departure. This policy has never included a 24-hour free cancellation window from the time of booking.

5. SAS Increases Change Fees for SkyTeam Award Tickets
Effective July 4, 2025, SAS has updated the change fees for SkyTeam award bookings. The fee, previously a flat 150 SEK per person, now varies based on the route.
- Short-Haul (Scandinavia & Europe): 250 SEK / 250 NOK / 175 DKK / 25 EUR / 25 USD
- Long-Haul (Rest of World): 750 SEK / 750 NOK / 525 DKK / 75 EUR / 75 USD
- Adding a feeder flight still costs 150 SEK per person.
- Existing Bookings: Trips booked before July 4th can be changed once at the old rate. Subsequent changes will incur the new fees.
6. Planned ‘No-Show’ Rule Change Is Postponed
SAS has postponed a planned change to its ‘no-show’ policy that was set to take effect on July 1. After listening to customer feedback, the airline announced that the stricter rules will not be implemented, and the change is delayed until further notice.
- What was planned? The change would have required passengers with Pro/Flex tickets to cancel or rebook at least one hour (shorthaul) or three hours (longhaul) before departure. Failing to do so (a ‘no-show’) would have resulted in forfeiting the ticket’s value.
- What is the current rule? For now, the existing, more flexible rule remains. This means Pro/Flex tickets can still be changed or fully refunded even after the flight has departed in case of a no-show.
7. New Route: SAS Launches Flights to Nuuk, Greenland 🇬🇱
SAS has reconnected with Greenland for the first time in over 20 years, launching a new direct route from Copenhagen (CPH) to Nuuk (GOH). The route operates three times a week during the summer, opening up a unique Arctic destination for EuroBonus members. What makes this route particularly exciting is that it’s a 5+ hour flight available for an insanely cheap redemption rate, making it one of the best value awards in the EuroBonus program!

8. New Partner: Earn EuroBonus Points on TAP Air Portugal 🇵🇹
Starting July 9, 2025, EuroBonus members can earn Bonus points when flying with TAP Air Portugal. This opens up new earning opportunities on TAP’s extensive network to Portugal, Africa, and the Americas. Remember to add your EuroBonus number when booking.

Heads up! It’s important to keep an eye on these changes and be prepared to embrace change. We advise all EuroBonus members to make any desired bookings right away if they see availability. The situation is changing rapidly, and there’s no guarantee that the integration with each partner airline will remain available until SAS officially leaves Star Alliance on August 31. The promotion STARTS TODAY at 12:00 PM CET, and is only valid for 24 hours, so hurry up and grab your ticket. Read more in this post.
As a funny note, the campaign caused such a massive speculation, that members almost blew up the CEO’s inbox (Anko van der Werff) asking where the flight is going to. LOL.
2. Higher Fees For The SAS EuroBonus World Mastercard Premium
Starting May 1, 2024, the following changes will take place: The price for the card will be increased by 40kr per month, which means that the annual price will be raised 25% (to 2335 kr). The new annual price will be charged the next time you pay for the card.
To sugarcoat the impact of the price increase, the card also announced (somewhat beneficial) changes to the calculation of status points. Status points will still be calculated as 25% of Extra Points earned during the month, but now introducing a minimum level of 500 Status points. For example, if you only earn 300 Status Points in any given month, you will now receive 500 Status Points. This way, members can make sure they get at least 6000 Status Points annually if the card is used every month.
The SAS EuroBonus World Mastercard Premium card will still offer the following benefits:
- Fly Premium: bonus trips in SAS Business and SAS Plus at the points price of SAS Go (upgrade for free).
- Status points each month you use the card.
- Up to 25 Extra Points per SEK 100 on all purchases.
- Double points campaigns several times a year.

3. New Route to Atlanta and Cooperation with Delta
SAS announced a new route from Copenhagen to Atlanta starting June 17, 2024. This route will allow passengers to connect to Delta Air Lines’ network in the USA, the Caribbean, and Latin America. SAS also hinted at a closer cooperation with Delta Air Lines on other US routes.
When SAS announced the new route, they also mentioned a tighter collaboration with Delta Air Lines for onward connections from Atlanta. It all suggests that SAS customers will soon use Delta Air Lines more frequently for onward connections, most likely even more if SAS joins SkyTeam.
There are indications that the partnership between SAS and Delta Air Lines goes beyond just the Atlanta route. On SAS’ website, Delta Air Lines is now offered as the onward connection for many destinations, including Las Vegas, Denver, Minneapolis, Boston, New York, Washington DC, and Los Angeles.
Keep in mind that while these routes/itineraries are convenient, they do not accrue points in the EuroBonus programs yet, for the legs operated by Delta.

SAS is bringing back an Airbus A350 it had previously rejected just over a year ago. The decision comes as the airline seeks to increase its widebody capacity. This particular A350-900, which once operated under the SAS registration SE-RSC between 2020 and 2022, will fly again under a new registration (VP-COC).
The move follows SAS filing for bankruptcy in July 2022. As part of restructuring efforts, the airline significantly reduced its fleet size by ending several aircraft leasing agreements early. This included letting go of three A350s, leaving them with only three remaining in the fleet.
It will be interesting to see how this reintroduction impacts SAS’s operations and whether they will consider returning the other two previously rejected A350s. It will also be interesting to watch out for fleet development after the announced acquisition by Air France-KLM and others.

6. SAS Partners With Airbus For Hydrogen-Powered Flights
Airbus, SAS, Swedavia, Vattenfall, and Avinor join forces to explore hydrogen-powered flights in Norway and Sweden. A significant collaboration has been announced to investigate the feasibility of hydrogen-fueled aircraft; the goal is to develop a framework for the rollout of hydrogen-powered flights in both countries.
Hydrogen is seen as a promising alternative to fossil fuels for aviation, as it produces zero carbon dioxide emissions from renewable electricity. The partnership will study hydrogen aircraft concepts and operations, regulatory requirements, infrastructure, supply, fuel storage, and airport refueling.
This is the first time a feasibility study of this kind has been conducted for two countries and over 50 airports. It reflects the partners’ shared ambition to use their expertise to decarbonize aviation and achieve the goal of net zero carbon emissions by 2050.
