About Turkish Airlines Miles&Smiles
Miles&Smiles is the frequent flyer program of Turkish Airlines. Members can earn miles by flying with Turkish Airlines or its partner airlines, including members of the Star Alliance network. The miles earned depend on the fare class, distance flown, and membership tier. Plus, miles can be used to book award flights with Turkish Airlines or partner airlines, upgrading to a higher class on Turkish Airlines flights, or spent on other rewards like excess baggage, lounge access, or purchasing products at Shop&Miles.
Program Features We Love
- Stopover Program: One of the standout features of Miles&Smiles is the Stopover Program. When flying through Istanbul on a round-trip international flight, you can add a stopover in this vibrant city for up to 7 days without any extra costs.
- Family Pooling: Miles&Smiles offers a Family Membership feature that allows you to pool miles with your family members.
- Award Ticket Flexibility: With Miles&Smiles, you can book award tickets with a mix of miles and cash, offering flexibility when you’re short on miles. Plus, you can change or cancel award tickets with minimal fees, giving you added peace of mind.
- Upgrade Awards: Miles&Smiles makes it relatively easy to use your miles for cabin upgrades on Turkish Airlines flights.
- Mile Transfer and Sharing: Miles&Smiles members can transfer miles between accounts or even share miles with other members.
- Additive Pricing for Turkish Airlines Flights: Award pricing for itineraries flown entirely on Turkish Airlines is now additive, meaning each segment’s cost is added together, making connecting flights more expensive.
Major Devaluation in February 2024. Turkish Airlines significantly increased award prices across the board, affecting both Turkish Airlines and partner flights. This devaluation has impacted the program’s value proposition, making it less attractive for some redemptions.
How To Find Turkish Airlines Award Availability (Step-by-step)
1. Go to AwardFares
Creating an account is optional, but it’s also free, and it gives you access to more features. Make sure to sign up for one here.
2. Select the Frequent Flyer Program
In the Frequent Flyer Program picker, select Turkish Airlines Miles&Smiles.
3. Add a Route(s)
In the From and To fields, enter your departure and arrival airports. In the example below, we search for flights between Istanbul (IST) and New York (JFK).
4. Explore Travel Dates
Tap on Calendar to add a specific date.
AwardFares will search for available seats on flights that day, and show the results in a list below.
Alternatively, you can use the Timeline View feature to check availability across multiple days at once. The bars show different classes in different colors.
5. Sort by Price
A key advantage of AwardFares is that it lets you easily sort results with just a few clicks. It’s the simplest way to explore the cheapest options and find the best awards.
On the result list, tap on the header columns to sort the results by price. Use the Eco, Prem, Biz, and First class tags to find cheap awards across multiple dates, itineraries, and airlines.
Plus, use the Max Price pill to set a maximum number of miles for the reward flights you are searching.
6. Filter & Explore (optional)
Try filtering out by cabin class (e.g., Business Class, First Class), number of stops (e.g., nonstop), number of passengers, aircraft type, or even flight number!
7. Book on Turkish Airlines’ Website
Once you find your desired flight, click the Book button.
AwardFares will redirect you to Turkish Airlines Miles&Smiles website to finish the booking process, without the need to re-enter your search criteria, as it will be pre-populated.
Understanding Miles&Smiles Award Chart
The Miles&Smiles award chart is region-based, meaning the geographic regions of the origin and destination determine the mileage required for an award flight. Like many carriers, Turkish Airlines has divided the world into specific regions, such as North America, Europe, Asia, Africa, etc. The chart lists the miles required for a one-way or round-trip ticket between these regions.
Promotion Award Ticket vs. Award Ticket
Turkish Airlines’ Miles&Smiles program offers two types of award tickets for redeeming miles on flights: Promotion Award Tickets and Award Tickets. Promotion Award Tickets are a great option if you can be flexible with your travel dates and are looking for the best value for your miles. Award Tickets are a better choice if you need more flexibility in your travel plans or want to fly on a Star Alliance partner airline.
Promotion Award Ticket | Award Ticket | |
---|---|---|
Miles required | Lower | Higher |
Seat availability | Limited; subject to allocation | Unlimited, based on available seats on the flight |

Awards on Partner Airlines (Star Alliance)
Miles&Smiles is a member of the Star Alliance, allowing members to redeem miles on a vast network of partner airlines. The redemption rates for partner flights generally follow the same region-based chart, but availability and surcharges can differ. Notably, the award availability on partners can sometimes be more restricted, and the surcharges can vary.

How Are Segments Priced? (Additive Pricing)
Another straightforward aspect of Miles&Smiles is its pricing for itineraries that incur multiple segments: just add them up!
Here’s an example on their website: an Economy Class promotional award ticket from Dubai to London costs 33,000 miles, which is 18,000 Miles for the DXB-IST segment and 15,000 Miles for the IST-LHR segment.
It’s easy to confirm this with AwardFares, see the example below where we search for flights from Stockholm (ARN) to New York (JFK). We see available seats in Economy for 75k miles.
The pricing corresponds to adding up the two segments ARN-IST (20k miles) and IST-JFK (55k miles).
Turkish Airlines provides an online calculator to check for the award prices quickly based on the destinations. Alternatively, remember that AwardFares shows flight prices directly in the result list when searching for available seats.
Stopovers and Open-Jaws
One extremely valuable perk of Miles&Smiles is the allowance of a stopover on award tickets. Members can book a stopover in Istanbul for up to 7 days. Additionally, open-jaw itineraries are permitted, allowing travelers to fly into one city and return from another, though the mileage cost will reflect the more expensive segment.
AwardFares vs. Turkish Airlines Website
AwardFares is a powerful tool for searching award flights, especially when compared to using the Turkish Miles&Smiles website. It simplifies the process by allowing searches across different frequent flyer programs, routes, and dates simultaneously, making it much easier to find the best award flights in a matter of seconds.
- Save Time with Broad Search. Instead of manually searching day by day on the Turkish Miles&Smiles website, AwardFares allows you to view multiple dates and routes at once. This saves you time and ensures you don’t miss out on better flight options.
- Better Availability Visibility. Turkish Airlines’ website may not always display all available partner award flights, especially for complex itineraries. AwardFares provides a comprehensive view of both Turkish Airlines and Star Alliance partners, helping you discover availability that might be hidden or difficult to find on the Miles&Smiles website.
- Price Alerts. Find the best Promotion Awards at the best rates by simply setting up alerts and getting notified by AwardFares when seats become available.
- Advanced Filters. The Turkish Miles&Smiles website offers limited search filters, often making it difficult to narrow down your choices. AwardFares provides advanced filtering options, such as specific cabin classes, airlines, and connection preferences, helping you find the exact flights you need.
- Compare Across Multiple Programs! Turkish Miles&Smiles is limited to its own flights and those of Star Alliance partners. AwardFares allows you to compare these options with other frequent flyer programs, potentially finding better value or availability on different airlines.
